The Mystery of Almond St

Here's an attractive little pocket-handkerchief park at the roundabout on the corner of Wollongong Rd and Firth St. But where is Almond St? There is no Almond St in Postcode 2205.

Looks like a job for the local history section of the public library....

Hi Vik. I did have some photos of Glenwood, but they weren't too good. I will wander up and do some new ones in the near future!

Great Site Sally. Could you please contact me at rdha@netspace.net.au I am from the Rockdale District Heritage Association and I would love to help you put up more info about the area we live in. There is so much un discovered history in this area and it is great to see someone actually promoting it

Hi Sally
Almond Street was renamed Done Street. I have a 1930's street directory and it shows Firth Street ending at the Almond Street/Burrows Road level crossing at the railway. The name was changed sometime later in memory of Rev. John Done.
I also have some info on 'Glenwood' in Eden Street if Vik would like to contact me.
Regards
Greg

Did you see that your blog and this post in particular got a mention in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader a few weeks back?

Well done!

Great site! Almond Street Reserve was the old tram terminus. The trams ran up Wollongong Rd to Bexley. My father used to tell me stories of the trams running.

It looks as though it's where the stationmaster's cottage was in this photo:

"Wincanton 2205" has quite a ring to it don't you think?
